Methods Used

At Wichita Counseling & Hypnotherapy, therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. I draw from a variety of approaches depending on what you're facing, how you process things, and what you’re most comfortable with. Some methods are structured and skill-based. Others go deeper—into the subconscious, the emotional body, or even what some describe as the spiritual self.

Here’s a look at the core approaches I use:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most well-established and effective forms of therapy for things like anxiety, depression, and unhelpful thought patterns. It helps you identify the beliefs and mental habits that keep you stuck—and replace them with more helpful ways of thinking, feeling, and acting.

There are many forms of CBT, including:

  • REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy)

  • Schema Therapy

  • ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy)

  • Mindfulness-Based CBT

Each has its own flavor, and together they offer practical tools for change. We’ll use these when structure and clarity are helpful for building insight and forward momentum.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy helps uncover how your past—especially early attachment experiences—influences your present. Many of the patterns we repeat in relationships or within ourselves were formed in childhood. This approach brings those unconscious dynamics into the light so that you can begin to change them, rather than feel controlled by them.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why do I keep doing this even though I know better?”, psychodynamic work can help connect the dots with compassion and understanding.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is ideal for managing intense emotions, improving relationships, and finding a balance between acceptance and change. It’s especially helpful if you feel reactive, overwhelmed, or stuck in black-and-white thinking.

Skills from DBT include:

  • Mindfulness – learning to notice without judgment

  • Distress Tolerance – calming your system when everything feels too much

  • Emotion Regulation – working with your feelings instead of against them

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness – setting boundaries without shame

I often integrate DBT skills into both traditional and therapy sessions, and even hypnosis.

Hypnosis

My approach to hypnos uses gentle, extended hypnosis to help you access the deeper layers of your mind—the parts that often hold emotional patterns, beliefs, and memories that traditional talk therapy can’t fully reach.

My approach to hypnosis is more of a gentle, client-centered approach that uses hypnosis to access the deeper layers of the mind, where emotional patterns, beliefs, and unresolved experiences often live. But unlike traditional hypnosis, where the therapist leads, my approach is led entirely by your subconscious mind.

That means you’re never forced to revisit painful memories or experiences. During a session, the subconscious brings forward only what you’re ready for—at a pace that feels safe and manageable. My role is not to direct or interpret, but simply to stay curious, ask gentle questions, and hold space for exploration. Your subconscious guides the process, and I follow.

The experience is often deeply calming and intuitive. Using a slow, 30-minute guided imagery induction, we create a quiet space where your subconscious can speak through images, emotions, or felt-senses. Many clients describe it as dreamlike or even spiritual-like, discovering a wiser, more connected part of themselves.

While this approach is somewhat unique, it draws inspiration from approaches like Internal Family Systems (IFS), guided imagery, and somatic therapy—all of which have strong research foundations. Some clients experience emotional release or profound clarity. Others describe moments of peaceful insight or healing they didn’t expect.

Whatever shows up, it’s yours, not something imposed. And that’s what makes the process so powerful. It’s not about fixing you from the outside. It’s about creating space for the part of you that already knows how to heal to do its work, when it’s ready.
