What to Expect

Whether you're new to therapy, new to hypnosis, or just new to working with me, this page is here to help you feel comfortable and informed. Here's how the process works at Wichita Counseling & Hypnotherapy—from first contact to what happens in a session.

Getting Started

You can reach out by phone, text, or email to ask questions or schedule a free phone consultation. We’ll have a quick, no-pressure conversation to explore what you're looking for and whether I’m the right fit for your needs.

If you decide to move forward, I’ll send:

  • A secure intake form

  • A brief overview of how sessions work

  • Any other info that might help you feel prepared and supported

Everything you share is confidential.

Your First Session

Our first full session is a chance to slow down and breathe. We’ll talk through what’s bringing you in, what’s felt stuck, and what you’re hoping might shift.

Whether we use talk therapy, hypnosis, or a blend of both depends entirely on your comfort level. Some people like to ease in slowly. Others are ready to dive deep right away. Either way is completely okay—you’re in control of the pace.

Hypnosis Is Always Optional

Some clients are drawn to hypnosis, while others prefer traditional therapy. Many choose to explore both. Either way, hypnosis is never required and only used if you feel ready and interested. We’ll talk through how it works, answer any questions, and decide together if it’s a good fit for your goals.

What Hypnosis Is (and Isn’t)

Hypnosis isn’t mind control, and you won’t “go under” or lose awareness. It’s a relaxed, focused state—similar to deep meditation or getting lost in a book. You’re awake, aware, and can talk at any time.

Clients often describe it as:

“I felt calm, grounded, and more connected to myself.”
“It was like my subconscious helped me get unstuck.”
“It felt quiet and safe—like I could finally listen to myself.”

What If I Don’t Think I Can Be Hypnotized?

It’s a common concern, and completely valid. What I offer isn’t stage hypnosis or rapid induction. There are no snapping fingers or swinging watches. Instead, we use a slow, 30-minute guided imagery process that helps you gently shift into a calm, focused inward state.

This slower method works well for almost everyone—including people who feel anxious, skeptical, or unsure. And you don’t have to feel “hypnotized” for it to be effective. You’re always in control and can return to full alertness anytime.

After a Session

Most clients leave feeling clearer, lighter, or more grounded—whether we’ve done talk therapy, hypnosis, or a mix of both. When we touch on something meaningful, emotional release or insight can unfold naturally.

I may offer simple reflection prompts, journal questions, or small practices to support your growth—but there’s no pressure and no heavy homework unless you want it.

If you’re doing a 3-hour intensive, time is built in to reflect, decompress, and process whatever came up. Whether the session is deep and emotional or quiet and internal, your experience always leads the way.

Methods I Use

Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all. I draw from a range of approaches based on what’s most effective and comfortable for you:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Identify and change unhelpful thought patterns using tools from ACT, Schema Therapy, and mindfulness-based CBT.

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Explore how early attachment and unconscious patterns shape your present challenges.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Build skills to regulate emotion, navigate relationships, and manage distress more effectively.

  • Optional Hypnosis & IST: A gentle, subconscious-led process using guided imagery to access deeper emotional layers. You’re never forced to relive anything—your subconscious brings forward only what you’re ready for. I follow with curiosity and care. Some describe this work as calming, intuitive, or even spiritual. While IST is still emerging as a formal model, it draws from well-established practices like IFS, somatic work, and guided imagery.

Still Unsure?

It’s normal to feel uncertain, especially when starting something new. Whether you’re just exploring or already ready to begin, you’re welcome to reach out. I’ll walk you through each step at a pace that works for you.
